Burnaby is a useful place to learn because a relatively small area gives new drivers exposure to very different driving environments. Major roads such as Kingsway, Canada Way and Lougheed Highway provide practice with multi-lane traffic, busy intersections, lane changes and maintaining awareness in heavier traffic. Quieter residential streets provide a better environment for developing basic manoeuvres, parking and observation skills.
Burnaby's hills are useful too. Areas around Burnaby Mountain and North Burnaby give students opportunities to practise starting, stopping and parking on inclines. Hill parking is an important skill to understand, including how to position the wheels correctly when parking uphill or downhill.
Metrotown adds another type of driving environment. Drivers encounter busy intersections, pedestrians, buses, parking entrances and heavier traffic concentrated within a relatively small area. Practising here can help students develop observation, lane selection, space management and forward planning.
The goal isn't to memorize a particular road-test route. It's to become comfortable enough with different road and traffic conditions that you're prepared to drive safely wherever the examiner directs
