Class 7 Driving Lessons

First-time driver lessons for learners on a Class 7L, building the skills needed to pass the Class 7 road test and earn an N.

Class 7 is the first road test in British Columbia's graduated licensing program. You take it on your Class 7L learner's licence, and passing it gives you a Class 7N novice licence, the one with the N sign on the back.

Most of our Class 7 students have never driven before, and that is completely normal. The first lesson starts in a quiet area at whatever pace you need: seat and mirror position, how the pedals actually respond, steering without over-correcting. Nobody gets pushed into traffic before they are ready.

From there we build up to the skills the Class 7 test is actually looking for: intersections, lane changes, parking manoeuvres and hazard awareness, all in an automatic, dual-control car where the instructor has pedals too. That safety net matters more than people expect: it is the reason a nervous first-timer can start on real roads much sooner.

Who it's for

New drivers holding a BC Class 7L learner's licence, including teenagers taking their first lessons and adults learning to drive for the first time.

What you'll learn

  • Vehicle controls, seating position and mirror setup from scratch
  • Starting, stopping and steering smoothly at low speed
  • Right and left turns, and reading intersection priority
  • Additional skills based on your experience and areas for improvement
  • Lane changes with proper mirror and shoulder-check habits
  • Parallel parking, stall parking and hill parking
  • Identifying hazards early: the skill examiners score hardest

What you need

  • A valid BC Class 7L learner's licence
  • A supervising adult is not needed during lessons: your instructor supervises
  • Appropriate footwear: no heels, no sandals

Common questions

I have never driven before. Can I still book a lesson?

Yes. Most Class 7 students have never been behind the wheel. The first lesson starts in a quiet area and moves at your pace. We do not take you into traffic until you are comfortable with the basic controls.

How long must I hold my L before the Class 7 road test?

ICBC requires you to hold a Class 7L learner's licence for at least 12 months before taking the Class 7 road test. That is reduced to 9 months if you complete an ICBC-approved driver training course.

Is the car automatic or manual?

All lessons are taught in an automatic vehicle with dual controls, so the instructor has their own brake and accelerator. Note that if you pass your road test in an automatic, your BC licence carries no restriction: you may still drive a manual.

Can a parent sit in on the lesson?

Yes, by prior agreement. Lessons are normally one-on-one, but we allow additional passengers when both the instructor and student agree beforehand, up to a maximum of three people in the vehicle.
